How to Program a Mini Cooper Key Fob (DIY, Dealer, or Locksmith)
A new MINI Cooper key must be coded to the car’s immobilizer module (EWS3 on 2002 to 2006 cars, CAS3 on 2007 to 2015 models, FEM or BDC on newer ones). Dealers order keys pre-coded by VIN; specialist locksmiths can add keys to many models. Owners can only re-sync remotes on early cars. Expect roughly $250 to $500.
MINI has been part of BMW since the 2002 relaunch, so its key systems follow BMW’s closely. The generation code of your car (R53, R56, F56 and so on) is the fastest way to work out what programming it needs.

MINI Key Systems by Generation
Years are approximate and refer to US models.
| Generation | Years and models | Key style | Immobilizer |
|---|---|---|---|
| R50 / R52 / R53 | About 2002 to 2008 (Cooper, Cooper S, Convertible) | Blade key with remote buttons | EWS3 |
| R55 to R61 | About 2007 to 2016 (R56 hatch, Clubman, Countryman, Coupe, Roadster, Paceman) | Round fob inserted into a dash slot; Comfort Access optional | CAS3 / CAS3+ |
| F54 / F55 / F56 / F57 / F60 | About 2014 to 2024 | Keyless-capable fob, push-button start | FEM or BDC |
| Newest generation | About 2025 on | Keyless fob; digital key on some | Latest BMW Group architecture; dealer route |
What MINI Owners Can Do Themselves
On R50, R52 and R53 MINIs with EWS3, owners can usually re-synchronize the remote buttons of a key that is already coded to the car. The commonly used BMW-family sequence is:
- Sit in the car with all doors closed.
- Insert the key and turn it to position 1, then back off within about 5 seconds. Remove the key.
- Within about 30 seconds, press and hold the unlock button.
- While holding unlock, press the lock button three times within about 10 seconds, then release.
- The car should lock and unlock to confirm. Repeat for other keys within 30 seconds.
This only restores remote functions on a coded key. It will not make a brand-new or used key start the car. On R56-era and later MINIs, a coded key synchronizes automatically when used, so there is no owner procedure.
What You Need for a New MINI Key
- VIN and ownership documents for a dealer order.
- Your generation code, so a locksmith knows which module (EWS3, CAS3, FEM, BDC) they are dealing with.
- A compatible key. Used MINI keys are written to their original car; some locksmiths can renew certain keys, but a new key is the safer choice.
- A battery charger on the car during programming (the shop provides it).

How MINI Key Programming Works
At a MINI dealer
- The dealer orders a key by VIN from BMW Group. It is produced already coded for your car; allow several days to two weeks.
- When it arrives, the key typically works once used in the car. The dealer can check key status with ISTA and disable lost keys.
At a locksmith
- The locksmith reads key data from the EWS3, CAS3, FEM or BDC module, either through the OBD2 port or by removing the module and reading it on the bench.
- A compatible blank key is written with that data.
- The key is tested for start and remote functions.
A MINI key programming tool in this sense is a professional key programmer that supports BMW-group modules. These are expensive and bench reading carries risk, which is why most owners use a locksmith. See our key fob programming tool guide for what consumer tools can and cannot do.
MINI Key Fob Programming by Model Year
2007 and 2009 MINI Cooper key fob programming
A 2007 MINI may be an R53 (convertible) or an R56 (hatch), so check the generation. The 2009 Cooper hatch is an R56 with CAS3: the round key goes in the dash slot. A dealer or BMW-capable locksmith can add a key.
MINI Cooper R56 key fob programming
R56 keys are coded to CAS3. Later CAS3+ software is harder for some locksmith tools but is widely supported. Comfort Access keys cost more.
2013 MINI Cooper key fob programming
The 2013 Cooper hatch is still an R56 with CAS3+. The 2014+ F56 moved to FEM or BDC with a different fob.
MINI Key Fob Programming Cost
| Option | Typical 2026 US cost |
|---|---|
| Dealer key, standard | About $300 to $500 |
| Dealer key, Comfort Access | About $400 to $550 |
| Locksmith, supported generation | About $250 to $450 |
| Owner remote re-sync (R50/R53) | Free |
See the key fob programming cost guide for more context.
If It Doesn’t Work
- R56 key works intermittently: check the battery first using the MINI Cooper key fob battery guide.
- Car will not start with a new key: the key is not coded to the immobilizer.
- Re-sync fails on an R53: timing is strict; try again, and confirm the key is coded.
Since MINI uses BMW systems, our BMW key fob programming guide explains EWS, CAS, FEM and BDC in more depth. For all brands, see the key fob programming hub, and if every key is gone, read programming a key fob without a working key.
Checklist Before You Pay for a MINI Key
- Find your generation code. It is in your registration paperwork or easy to look up by VIN. R50/R53, R56 and F56 keys are all different.
- Ask whether the locksmith reads the module on the bench. It is normal for some generations, but ask about their experience and warranty.
- Compare Comfort Access pricing. If your car has Comfort Access, a standard key may still start it but will not offer keyless entry.
- Disable lost keys. BMW-group cars track keys individually, so a missing key can be locked out at the dealer.
- Check the battery first. Many “dead” MINI keys only need a new coin cell, covered in our battery guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can re-sync the remote buttons on 2002 to 2008 R50/R53 keys that are already coded. A new key must be coded by a dealer or locksmith.
R56 keys are coded to the CAS3 module. A dealer orders one by VIN, or a locksmith writes one using CAS3 data. There is no owner procedure.
Typically about $250 to $500 including the key, with Comfort Access keys at the top of the range.
Generally not without special equipment, because MINI keys are written for one car. Buy a new key.
Dealers use ISTA with factory-coded keys. Locksmiths use professional key programmers that support BMW-group modules.
