How to Program a Lexus Key Fob (DIY, Dealer, or Locksmith)
Older Lexus models with a separate remote or remote head key, roughly late 1990s to mid-2000s, can often add a remote using Toyota’s door and ignition sequence. Most Lexus models since about 2006 use a SmartAccess smart key, which needs a key programmer, a locksmith or a Lexus dealer. Smart key all-keys-lost jobs cost the most.
Lexus uses the same key and immobilizer technology as Toyota, but it adopted push-button smart keys much earlier and on more models. Lexus calls the system SmartAccess, and on models such as the IS 250, ES 350 and RX 350 it has been standard or nearly standard since the mid-to-late 2000s. That makes most Lexus key jobs professional jobs.
Owners of older RX 300/330, ES 300/330, GS and LS models with a traditional key still have a DIY option for the remote buttons. Here is how to tell which group you are in.

Lexus key types by era
| Key type | Typical Lexus models and years | Remote | Immobilizer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transponder key + separate or integrated remote | About 1998-2006 on many models (RX 300/330, ES 300/330, GS, LS, GX 470) | Onboard on many | Tool or pro (master key procedure on some) |
| SmartAccess smart key (push-button) | About 2006 onward: IS 250/350, ES 350, RX 350, GS, LS; now on all models | Tool or pro | Tool or pro |
| Card key (thin smart card) | Optional on some 2010s models | Tool or pro | Tool or pro |
Older Lexus keys often come as a master key (black head, or with remote) and a valet key (gray head or no remote). The valet key cannot be used to program anything.
What you need
- The correct key or smart key. Match the FCC ID and part number. Lexus smart keys are frequency- and model-specific, and many Toyota and Lexus fobs look similar without being interchangeable.
- A fresh battery. Most Lexus smart keys use a CR2032; card keys use a different, thinner cell, so check before buying. See our Lexus key fob battery guide.
- A working key for adding keys. Adding a key with one working smart key is much cheaper than recovering from all keys lost.
- Proof of ownership for the dealer or locksmith.
Replacement Lexus Smart Key
Check the FCC ID, part number and board ID against your original key, and confirm your locksmith can program that exact fob. New, unused fobs program most reliably.

Lexus key fob programming instructions for older remotes
On many older Lexus models with a traditional key and remote, the Toyota-family onboard sequence programs the remote buttons. Start with the driver’s door open and unlocked, other doors closed, and the key out.
- Insert and remove the key twice.
- Close and open the driver’s door twice.
- Insert and remove the key once.
- Close and open the driver’s door twice.
- Insert the key and close the driver’s door.
- Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON and back once (add mode) or twice (rewrite mode, erases all remotes), then remove the key.
- The locks cycle once (add) or twice (rewrite).
- Within about 40 seconds, press LOCK and UNLOCK together for about 1.5 seconds, then LOCK alone for about 1 second. One lock cycle means success.
- Open the driver’s door to exit.
Work steadily, finishing the entry steps within about 40 seconds. Some Lexus models differ; our Toyota key fob programming guide explains the modes in more detail.

Programming a Lexus SmartAccess key
Smart keys register through the OBD2 port. The process differs by situation:
- Add a key with a working smart key: a dealer uses Toyota’s Techstream software with online security access; many locksmiths use aftermarket tools. Typically 20 to 40 minutes.
- All keys lost: on many models, the smart key computer must be reset, either by connecting an emulator or bypass adapter or by removing a module for bench work. This takes longer and costs more.
Owners asking for the cheapest Lexus key fob programmer usually find that an owner-level tool covers only some models and still needs a working key. Check coverage carefully or compare with a locksmith quote. Our OBD2 scanner for Lexus guide explains what diagnostic tools can and cannot do.
Model notes: IS 250, ES 350, RX 330 and RX 350
- IS 250 (2006-2015), including 2008: SmartAccess on most cars; a professional job.
- ES 350 (2007 on), including 2008: smart key on most cars; a few base cars used a traditional key with remote.
- RX 330 (2004-2006): traditional key with a separate or integrated remote on many; the onboard remote sequence is worth trying, and the chip needs a tool.
- RX 350 (2007 on): SmartAccess on most; plan on a locksmith or dealer.
Before you book a Lexus key appointment
- Bring every working key. Some procedures re-register all keys, and a key left at home may need another visit.
- Ask whether the price includes the emergency key. SmartAccess fobs hold a mechanical key for the driver door that must be cut to your locks.
- Check whether a card key is included. If your Lexus came with a card key, it is registered like any other smart key and counts toward the maximum number of keys.
- Know the maximum. Most Toyota and Lexus smart key systems store a limited number of keys. If old keys are lost, ask the programmer to delete them so they cannot unlock the car.
- Compare at least two quotes. Prices vary widely between locksmiths that have the right Lexus coverage and those that need to subcontract the work.
If programming does not work
- Locks cycle twice after the button presses: the remote was rejected; check FCC ID and battery.
- Key not detected after programming: see our smart key system malfunction guide.
- All keys lost: read our Lexus lost car key guide before calling around.

Add a key while you still have a working one, and get a locksmith quote. A locksmith is usually cheaper than the dealer, and adding a key costs far less than an all-keys-lost job.
Most RX 350s use a SmartAccess key that is registered through the OBD2 port with dealer software or a locksmith tool. There is no onboard button sequence for it.
Generally no. Even when the electronics are related, Lexus fobs have their own part numbers and often different board IDs. Match the part number from your original key.
Most Lexus smart keys use a CR2032. Card keys use a different, thinner cell, so check the one in your key.
Adding a smart key with a working key usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. An all-keys-lost job can take one to several hours, especially if a module has to be removed for bench work, so book a longer appointment and ask whether the locksmith can do it on site.
