How to Program an Acura Key Fob (DIY, Dealer, or Locksmith)
Many older Acuras with a turn-key ignition let owners program the remote buttons with an ignition-and-lock-button sequence that takes about five minutes. The immobilizer chip in a new key, and every Keyless Access smart key, must be registered with Honda’s diagnostic system or a locksmith tool. Expect roughly $150 to $450 with the key.
Acura is Honda’s luxury brand, and its key systems follow Honda closely. That is good news for owners of older Acuras, because Honda-family remotes from the 1990s through the early 2010s are among the few that still support onboard programming. Newer push-button models are a different story.

Acura Key Types by Era
Years are approximate and vary by model.
| Key type | Example models and years | Remote programming | Immobilizer registration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transponder key + separate remote | Mid-1990s to mid-2000s: Integra, early TL, CL, RSX, first-generation MDX | Owner onboard procedure on many | Tool required |
| Remote head key | Roughly 2009 to 2014 on turn-key trims (TSX, some TL, RDX, ILX) | Onboard procedure on many | Tool required |
| Keyless Access smart key | RL (2005 on), MDX (2007 on, upper trims), TL (2009 on, some trims); standard on most 2014+ Acuras | Tool only | Tool only |
| Acura key with digital key features | Selected recent models using the Acura app | App / vehicle setup | Existing key required |
The immobilizer is Honda’s Immobilizer-Theft Deterrent System, sometimes called HISS. Even when you can program a remote yourself, a new key’s chip still has to be registered before the engine will start.
How to Program an Acura Key Fob Remote (Onboard Method)
This is the widely used Honda/Acura remote procedure for many turn-key models from the mid-1990s to roughly the early 2010s. Check your owner’s manual or ask a dealer if your model is not listed above; the timing is strict, and it may take a few attempts.
- Sit in the driver’s seat with all doors closed and all remotes you want to use in hand.
- Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON (II).
- Within about 1 to 4 seconds, press the LOCK button on one remote.
- Within about 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition to OFF.
- Repeat steps 2 to 4 three more times (four cycles in total). On the fourth press, the door locks should cycle, confirming programming mode.
- Within about 10 seconds, press LOCK on the same remote. The locks cycle to confirm.
- Press LOCK on each additional remote within about 10 seconds of the last one. Each should cause the locks to cycle.
- Turn the ignition to OFF, remove the key and test every remote.
Program all remotes in the same session. On many cars, entering programming mode clears remotes that are not re-entered.
What You Need
- A compatible remote or key matching the FCC ID and part number of your original.
- A cut key blade for remote head keys and the smart key’s emergency blade.
- Immobilizer registration by a dealer (Honda’s HDS or i-HDS) or a locksmith tool for any new transponder key or smart key.
- Proof of ownership for dealer or locksmith work.
Acura Replacement Key Fob or Smart Key
Check the FCC ID and part number on your current fob. Separate remotes are the easiest to self-program; smart keys still need a tool.

Programming Acura Smart Keys and Immobilizer Keys
For Keyless Access keys and any new transponder key, a dealer or locksmith follows this process:
- Cut the blade to your VIN key code.
- Connect HDS/i-HDS or a locksmith key programmer to the OBD2 port.
- Gain security access. Dealers do this online; locksmith tools use a PIN or a supported bypass.
- Register each key with the immobilizer. Smart keys are typically held near the start button when prompted.
- Test remote functions and engine start.
Our OBD2 key programming guide explains what these tools do.
Acura Key Fob Programming by Model
Acura TL key fob programming
The 2004 to 2008 TL uses a turn key with a separate remote on most cars, and the onboard procedure usually works for the remote. Some 2009 to 2014 TLs have Keyless Access smart keys, which need a tool.
Acura RDX key fob programming
The first-generation RDX (2007 to 2012) and many second-generation turn-key RDXs use keys whose remotes can often be added onboard. A 2017 RDX on a push-button trim uses a smart key that needs a dealer or locksmith.
How to program an Acura MDX key fob
The 2001 to 2006 MDX supports the onboard remote procedure on most cars. From 2007, many MDX trims use Keyless Access, and the 2022 MDX uses a smart key that requires a tool.
2005 Acura RL key fob programming
The 2005 RL was one of the first Acuras with Keyless Access. Its smart key must be registered with HDS or a capable locksmith tool.
Acura Key Fob Programming Cost
| Option | Typical 2026 US cost |
|---|---|
| Separate remote, owner-programmed | Remote cost only |
| Remote head key, locksmith | About $150 to $300 |
| Smart key, locksmith | About $200 to $400 |
| Smart key, dealer | About $300 to $450 |
Local prices vary; a search for Acura key fob programming in your town (Liberty, MO or anywhere else) should turn up dealer and locksmith quotes in these ranges. For more, see the key fob programming cost guide.
If It Doesn’t Work
- Locks never cycle: timing is off; slow down or speed up to stay in the 1 to 4 second window.
- Remote works, car won’t start: the key’s transponder is not registered.
- Weak range: replace the battery; see the Acura key fob battery replacement guide.
Because Acura uses Honda systems, our Honda key fob programming guide is a useful companion, and the Honda keyless remote not working guide applies to many Acura remotes too. For other brands, see the key fob programming hub.
Tips for the Onboard Method
- Use a watch or count out loud. The 1 to 4 second windows are the most common reason the locks never cycle.
- Point the remote at the car. Older Acura receivers can be fussy, especially with a fresh but slightly weak battery.
- Program every remote at once. Have all remotes in hand before you start, since entering programming mode can clear the old list.
- Use a remote that matches. The FCC ID must match your original, or the car will ignore it no matter how good the timing is.
- Know when to stop. If the locks never cycle after several careful tries, your model may not support onboard programming; a dealer or locksmith can register it with a tool.
