How to Program a Jeep Key Fob (DIY, Dealer, or Locksmith)

Quick Answer

Only older Jeeps (roughly 1999-2007 with Sentry Key) allow a DIY key add, and only with two working keys. Fobik keys and push-button smart keys on the Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass, Wrangler and Renegade need a key programmer with the vehicle PIN, a locksmith or a dealer. Expect about 15-45 minutes and $150-$450 professionally.

Jeep shares its key systems with Chrysler, Dodge and Ram, and those systems are stricter than Ford’s or GM’s. Most Jeeps built in the last 15 years need a four-digit security PIN tied to the VIN before a new key can be added, and 2018 and newer models add a Security Gateway Module that blocks many aftermarket tools unless they are authorized.

The good news is that a qualified locksmith can program almost any Jeep key, and older Jeeps still have a two-key “customer learn” procedure. Here is how to tell which situation you are in.

WIN (Wireless Ignition Node) with Fobik About 2007-2017 Compass and Patriot, 2008-2012 Liberty, 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee Fobik that plugs into the dash Tool with PIN or pro
RFHub About 2014 on Grand Cherokee and Cherokee, Wrangler JL (2018 on), Gladiator Smart key or Fobik-style key Tool with PIN or pro; SGW on 2018+
Fiat-based body computer Renegade (2015 on), Compass (2017 on) Flip key or smart key Tool with PIN or pro

What you need

  • The right key or fob. Match the FCC ID and part number to your original. A Fobik for a 2011 Grand Cherokee and one for a 2015 Grand Cherokee are not interchangeable.
  • A fresh CR2032. Most Jeep Fobiks, Wrangler remote head keys and smart keys use a CR2032. See our Jeep key fob battery guide for exceptions.
  • The vehicle PIN if you are programming with your own tool. Dealers can retrieve it with proof of ownership; many locksmith tools read it from the vehicle.
  • Proof of ownership for any dealer or locksmith visit.

Confirm the FCC ID and part number match your Jeep, and buy a new, unprogrammed fob. Chrysler-family fobs generally cannot be reused once they have been programmed to another vehicle.

Jeep key fob programming instructions: two-key customer learn

Many Sentry Key vehicles from about 1999 to 2007 support a “customer learn” procedure in the owner’s manual. It only works if you have two keys that already start the Jeep, and it is disabled on some vehicles. The general sequence is:

  1. Have the new key cut. Insert the first working key and turn the ignition to ON for at least 3 seconds but less than about 15, then turn it OFF and remove it.
  2. Within about 15 seconds, insert the second working key and turn it to ON. After about 10 seconds a chime sounds and the security light flashes, meaning the system is in learn mode.
  3. Turn the ignition OFF, remove the second key, and within about 60 seconds insert the new key and turn it to ON.
  4. After about 10 seconds a single chime sounds and the security light stays on for about 3 seconds, then goes out. The new key is programmed.

On many SKREEM-era Jeeps with a remote head key, the remote is learned along with the key. On models with a separate remote, the manual usually lists a separate remote procedure or sends you to the dealer.

Jeep key fob programming with an OBD2 key programmer

Programming a Fobik or smart key with a tool

If your Jeep has a Fobik or push-button start, the realistic routes are a key programmer, a locksmith, or the dealer. A typical tool session looks like this:

  1. Connect an IMMO-capable programmer to the OBD2 port and select your Jeep model and year.
  2. Choose “Add key” or “All keys lost.” The tool reads or asks for the PIN.
  3. Insert the new Fobik into the ignition or hold the smart key where the tool directs (often against the start button).
  4. Confirm the tool reports success, then test both the start and the remote buttons.

On 2018 and newer Jeeps with a Security Gateway Module, the tool must be registered for authorized access or connected through an SGW bypass. Our Autel key programming guide and OBD2 scanners for Jeep explain what to look for.

Model notes: Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass, Liberty, Renegade

  • Wrangler JK (2007-2018), including the 2013 Wrangler: remote head key. A locksmith tool handles it quickly; two-key methods are not reliable on every year.
  • Wrangler JL (2018 on) and Gladiator: RFHub smart key or key with remote; SGW applies.
  • Grand Cherokee: 2011-2013 Fobik with WIN; 2014 and newer RFHub smart key, so the 2015 Grand Cherokee is a tool or pro job.
  • Cherokee: XJ (to 2001) uses SKIM on later years; KL (2014 on) uses RFHub.
  • Compass and Patriot (2007-2017): Fobik with WIN. 2017 and newer Compass uses a Fiat-based system.
  • Liberty: 2002-2007 uses SKREEM; 2008-2012 uses a Fobik.
  • 2016 Renegade: flip key or smart key on a Fiat platform. Needs a tool with Renegade coverage and the PIN.

Tips before you buy a Jeep key

  • Get two keys programmed while you are paying for one visit. Locksmiths often charge much less for the second key in the same session, and two working keys are the minimum for the customer learn method on older Jeeps.
  • Check the buttons. Remote start and liftgate glass buttons only work if your Jeep has those features, and a fob without them cannot add them.
  • Confirm the blade. Fobiks and smart keys include an emergency blade for the driver door that must be cut to your locks.
  • Ask about SGW access if your Jeep is a 2018 or newer model. Some locksmiths charge a small extra fee for authorized gateway access.

If Jeep key fob programming fails

  • No chime in customer learn: the feature may be disabled, or one of your “working” keys is not actually programmed. A locksmith can check.
  • Tool cannot get security access: wrong PIN or the SGW is blocking access.
  • Fob was used before: most Chrysler-family fobs lock to the first vehicle. Buy new.
  • Start works but buttons do not: see our Jeep key fob not working guide.
